"The News" takes place on a freeway. Due to some disaster there is a serious obstruction in the freeway, and for some reason the road is very slick. The game takes place from the perspective of a news helicopter, which is trying to cover the story as it unfolds. Game mechanics are pretty simple, incoming traffic tries to slow down but instead skids towards the barrier, ultimately crashing into the barrier or other vehicles. The passengers of those vehicles flee to safety, and can be crushed under other vehicles (for bonus points!) When a line is completed (all lanes are full at some level), a road crew clears the line, and (somehow) the pieces above it fall down (or the lower pieces move up). Completing lines can have an effect on the news crew too, providing unexpected but predictable disturbances to the player's view of the playfield.
Game mechanics that differ from tetris: when dropping a piece intentionally (holding down), it goes faster if it has been dropping (accelerating) for long enough, it can break up pieces to close holes that would be untouchable in normal tetris. If the falling piece runs into a block that is connected on one or both sides, but has no block under it, it will drop down into that hole rather than staying where it is. (need visual example)
Multiplayer: When playing in a multiplayer mode, each player has a different news crew, and if a player does well, it will set into motion events that will hamper the other news crew's efforts (thus making it harder to see the playfield.)
Blood: When running over fleeing bystanders, the vehicle's tire tracks will turn red for a while. (Well, duh)
Black Carriages: At least one person wants to be able to run over baby carriages.
